The National Theatre
“Mozart’s operas for Prague”
The exhibition held on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of W. A. Mozart’s birth informs about the stagings of the operas Don Giovanni and La clemenza di Tito, which were composed directly for Prague and which Mozart also conducted personally at their world premieres.
The exhibition is open in the Mozart Parlor on the 1st balcony of the Estates Theatre and is accessible during all performances in this theatre.

March 2006

17 March – 4 September, The National Museum – Czech Museum of Music
“Music in Prague 1760–1810”
The exhibition held on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the birth of W.A. Mozart gives a complex insight into the musical life in Prague between 1760 and 1810. It introduces the composers (such as Jan Antonín Koželuch and Vinzenz Maschek) and virtuosos (such as V. Maschek and J. K. Kuchař) who lived in Prague, and also at pointing out the venues where their music was played – theatres, monasteries, choir lofts and music bands of nobility. Precious music collections are referred to, for example the collections of the Strahov and Břevnov Monasteries and the Convent of Nuns of St Elizabeth. The exhibits on display, namely sheet music, theatre posters, opera libretti, prints (pictures of Prague and composers) and paintings, come mainly from the collections of the music history department of the Czech Museum of Music and from other institutions, such as the Strahov Monastery, Břevnov Monastery, the music department of the National Library, the National Gallery, the Museum of the City of Prague and the Memorial of National Literature. The exhibition of course also remembers Mozart’s Prague visits. A richly illustrated catalogue is available.

1 September – 31 December,The Prague State Opera
“Mozartean exhibition”
The large-scale thematic exhibition reflects the tradition of Mozartean productions in the history of the Prague State Opera. Although in Prague Mozart’s name is most often connected with the Estates Theatre, the present-day Prague State Opera and its predecessors can also boast excellent productions of the great composer’s masterpieces, featuring some of the world’s famous singers. In the days of the New German Theatre, Mozart’s bust – along with those of Goethe and Schiller – even graced the front of the theatre building (they were removed due to the post-war wave of anti-German sentiment and what became of them is still unknown). The exhibition that can be seen in the PSO lounges from the beginning of September to the end of 2006, the Mozartean anniversary year, wants to draw attention to some interesting, though not so well-known aspects of Mozart’s Prague cult.

2 – 26 November, The National Library of the Czech Republic – Clementinum
“My Praguers Worship Me”
Prague Mozart Memorial and the Mozartean Cult. Mozart’s relation to the Clementinum is an integral part of the great topic “Mozart and Prague”. He visited it already during his first visit to Prague in January 1787. The National Library takes pride in the Mozart Memorial at the Clementinum which collects rare period copies and prints of Mozart’s compositions. The Mozart Memorial aims at its own further development, supplementation of facts and compilation of bibliography on Mozart. It was established in 1837, four years prior to the founding of the Salzburg Mozarteum, and so it is historicly the first Mozarteum in the world, reflecting the long admiration of Mozart in Prague.

“Mozart’s Prague”
The exhibition will conclude the year of the 250th Mozart anniversary celebrations and it will present his relation to the capital of the Bohemian Kingdom and its inhabitants. It will recall not only the ovation Prague prepared for the brilliant musician but it will also deal with the context of cultural, especially musical and theatrical life of that time, it will introduce its main representatives and events, such as the coronation of Leopold II. It is symbolic that the exhibition, which is to close on Mozart´s birthday on 27 January 2007, will take place at the Clam-Gallas Palace, which is closely related ot one of Mozart’s stays in Prague.
